Published 1630, this fine World map, with original color, was engraved by Henricus Hondius in 1630, in response to the emerging challenge of the Blaeu publishing house in Amsterdam. It is one of the finest examples of decorative cartography of the period. The border of this map includes voluptuous representations of the four elements, with corner portraits of the fathers of modern cartography: Caesar, Ptolemy, Gerard Mercator, and Jodocus Hondius. California is shown as an island and the Great Southern Continent is recorded.
